Is there a way to convert PCI-1x ports into standard PCI?

My new ASUS motherboard is a real gem, but it’s loaded with two of those rubbish PCI-1X ports. From what I can tell, they’re good for just about nothing more than taking up space on the motherboard that would otherwise be useful.
